just rebuilding a p200 elec start engine which i got cheap with a fooked woodruff key - flywheel side amongst other horrors. i replaced the key after checking the flywheel and crank for obvious damage or wear then i torqued the flywheel in the middle of the advised haynes manual settings and hey presto...it ran for 50 metres and now wont start. the main culprit is likely to be the flywheel. what should i look for and what can i torque the flywheel to? would this cure it? in fact as im not a very experienced vespa guy how do i remove and torque the flywheel without putting a piece of wood through the conrod??? oh the sweey mysteries of piaggios engine!!!

Knowing how tight he is he won,t buy one ! so either borrow one from his local friendly scooter shop or put it in first gear and get a mate to sit on it pressing the back brake down

after carefull retrospective thinking i reckon i may have spun the flywheel . if you have already salvaged a damaged woodruff key then i guess i should have worked the two taper surfaces matt again. it would seem vespa flywheel to crank mating is a more delicate business than the throw it on and tighten it Lammy .
i hope tonight that ive not killed the taper around the woodruff key when i rode it up the road. cue arrowdite and lapping paste bodge to allow me to break down on the north yorkshire moors outside Whitby rather than the comfort of my own garage,i have a flywheel holding tool now, 6 inch slotted screwdriver!! :baddevil: on the plus side the panels buffed up nicely, second hand p200 crank anyone??.

Hmmmmm, got my torque wrench out on the flywheel nut and couldnt undo it. i went as nuclear as i dare and it wouldnt shift. tapped the rivets with a hammer and nowt. weirdly it started as soon as a little easy start went down the 30 mil and then ticked over with the choke on. if its starting and ticking over then the timing must be ok??, then it revved quite cleanly. as soon as i got on it and put it into first gear it died a death, no power then was a bugger to restart, wouldnt bump either...put,,,,put......brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......nowt. fuel is p1551ing out the pipe so could it be clutch??? Vespas are supposed to never break.i bought it because ive always wanted a scooter with a petrol gauge. and dont get me started on Haynes manuals!! didnt say which end of the barrell stud went which way, long thread to the casing and short thread to the head or the other way around, flywheel nut clockwise thread or anticlockwise? literally a wank mag.

i would put grinding paste on the crank and "lap" the flywheel to the crank. then torque it to the correct psi

yup grinding paste and elbow grease has mated the two. i feel more relaxed now and t cutting the panels on a scoot when its running is very therapeutic.if it makes a noise and its shiney then its a man toy.
