Interesting thread on the other side (I know, I can’t help myself, I feel dirty).
Pictures of Guy Toppers engine with the crank case side off. He’s running a belt drive and some motorcycle clutch. It also looks like he’s running a dry clutch as well .
At first I thought he may be running an auto clutch, but not sure now.

Don't really know- there is some sort of leakage onto the rear wheel, and, as someone pointed out, its in bits. Can't criticise the guy for doing it though,does look interesting.

I think its bloody amazing, a cracking piece of kit.

I presume he's gone to all that trouble, for the benefit of reduced friction of belt drive.

It's one of the things i considered when i was thinking about more BHP.....transmission losses, and how could they be reduced? Not that i have the technical ability to do a belt drive conversion, but it was an idea that i had, and i thought it would have great benefits.....but would be an engineering disaster if i tried it.

I also considered dropping from a double link chain to a single link...various gearbox friction reducers and coatings, different bearing options, oil options, re-machinging the gearbox cogs, etc etc......and then realised that hese ideas were all flights of fantasy for my riding level!

Maybe when im in the top 5-10 i'll look into some Nasa style add-ons like Mr Topper!

Yup....that leakage can't be helping traction and grip!

Don't worry about it being in bits.....its a racer not a tourer....they're all in bits at one point or another!

I always said that Lambretta engines should have zips rather than fasteners.............. :biggrin:

I had a real good look and Guys bike is amazing. My assumption is that the conversion improved the quality and reliabilty of the drive train, whilst reducing losses. I also assume it gives him better flexibility for changing drive ratios without having to rely on stretched chains on a Gp6 motor! I loved the belt tensioner arrangement.

It was also noticable how many sensors there were in addition to the traditional EGT coming off various parts of the motor and going into a mass of black boxes and ECU's.

Loved the fact Guy seemed happy for people to look, rather than working covered up under an awning.

All those wires, boxes, belts, ECU's, gauges etc.....great fun, buts lots to potentially go wrong or fail on a race day maybe?

finally i get to see some pics of a running belt drive in a lammy.

been thinking about this the last couple years but since i am nowhere near the engineer to tackle something like this and the friend who implanted this idea into my forehad is taking a well deserved baby-timeout i´m still running chains in my engines.

since the pics are form a recent mallory test day, chances seem good to me to watch the bike 639 in action in june. i´m already making plans to go there on sunday after the eurojamboree to support 2 friends of mine who will be racing as well.

saw this on the other side as well, couldnt believe someone called it a bodge. looks quality to me.
as for the oil on the wheel, if he can make this kind of stuff im sure he is none to worried about a leaking seal/ gasket or what ever has caused it.
