looking at the LTH Variochain which puts downward pressure on the chain. Any good? or I'm sure I saw a spring loaded one which automatically tensions the chain but not sure who supplies them. Any ideas?

lth one is good and the boxenstops one is as good but cheaper.
a sprung loaded tensioner is a great idea but it needs to be on a ratchet otherwise it will just bounce on the chain i have been trying to source one from other engines for year to no avail

Have you come across the type fitted to the old Ford Kent engine? Long time ago now, can't remember the rotation or even whether its single or duplex chain, but it is a compact rachet type. Used to be cheap.
