Octagonal headset issue

Does anybody know if an octagonal sx type headset(non chrome ring type) would fit on a Li125 chrome ring frame? Would this depend on the type of forks i have?

no ...unless you remove the chrome ring as the non ring headsets are longer at the bottom to take up the space where the ring was

Is it just as simple as that? ie remove the chrome ring and fit the non chrome ring bearing assembly and then the headset will fit?

You will have to change the top steering bearing cone as well and unless you make up and weld on a bracket you will lose your steering lock as well.
