A bigger front sprocket is meant to be kinder to the clutch....whys that then?
If it's to do with torque and stuff is there some formula that you can use, i.e work it out for any two sprockets?

Sure its to do with the speed the crown wheel spins a smaller front sprocket will increase the speed the crown wheel turns. The faster it turns the harder it becomes for the plates etc in the clutch to grip and do there thing.
An adult will be along in a mo with the correct answer

Thats what I alway thought, but wouldn't a bigger front sprocket make the crown wheel spin faster?

its the size of both front and rear that matter and getting the right combination/gearing between the 2 , the larger a gear/cog the less rotations/speed per distance a smaller gear will turn more rotations/faster to obtain the same distance.
