Just got my scooter back from Chiselspeed at Leeds where Martin has fitted one of their M-tech advance retard units and I am stunned as to the difference it has made. Max BHP up / Max torque up but the biggest difference is to the smoothness of the acceleration + it now ticks over properly.
Anyone looking for something to add to their Christmas list then this has got to be it.
Am I the only one that knows about these little gadgets or do others have them fitted?

Can someone explain the advantages of these devices, are they mainly for the rev type motors or will they work with low rev (6000) max engines

Also got one fitted...tried it on 4 different settings so far, the difference between each setting is easily noticable. Setting 6 for me! Cured my weak tickover too. Cool!

Idle and low load really want more timing than is safe for high load. The devices retard timing as RPM increases. This is sort of a compromise - you are making the assumption that increasing RPM is the same as increasing load. A manifold pressure sensor would be better, but is much more difficult to implement. At any rate, as you plow into the throttle RPM goes up and timing retards, giving you a safe timing at high engine speed and load, but allowing earlier (more advanced) timing for tickover and low RPM, which are generally safe.

Don't lug it though, as the RPM will be low and the load high with advanced timing (bad combination there).

Seems like they are pretty popular and I'd like to try one myself sometime. There are a few flavors out there and they generally retard over a range of RPM. I think the Chiselspeed one is adjustable but the Agusto is fixed, so with that one you have to pick your final RPM when you buy the unit.

Are they any good for standard 125/ 150/ 175 engines and can they be fitted by an oaf like me or would I have to take it in to get done by the professionals?

If you know how to loosen a stator and twist it in its slots to the desired timing position; then pick a advance retard curve on the unit and can remove and replace spade connectors then it's do-able by an oaf; it must be cus a muppet can do it,

I don't think there is anything difficult in the fitting but for what it costs to have it fitted by the experts and set up on the dyno why bother messing about yourself and having to guess the best setting

What about for standard setups? Any real benefit?

I would personally say that all engines would benefit from one. How much you actually feel in the seat of your pants when out would depend on set up before ie engine size and tune etc.
