I have a casing with no matched endplate but a few other endplates to choose from, is there a shortcut to finding which endplate is the best fit without fitting the gearbox and endplate bearing?

Sadly, not really. You need to fit layshaft, loose gears and Xmas tree plus endplate to check all line up and gearbox moves freely. Oh, and plus of course endplate bearing

Yeah, that's what I thought, I couldn't see a way, but you know there's some smart cookies on here that sometimes come up with ingenious ideasdapper wrote: Oh, and plus of course endplate bearing

Probably need to stock up on bearings then

Interesting..............
To put your question another way - When a casing is noted as "with matched end plate " what exactly is matched ?
Is it as ,as suggested , assembled with all gears bearing and shims to check all the holes etc line up
or
The machined faces on the underside of the endplate and the machined holes for the bearings are parallel with each other etc
Any ideas ?

supposedly the case and end plate are machined together at the same time so all baring faces are in the same position

Thats what I would have thought tooRICSPEED wrote:supposedly the case and end plate are machined together at the same time so all baring faces are in the same position

In which case I would be surprised if the tolerances are very tight ( when concidering the state of some casting I have seen / out of position brake pivots etc)
Therefore as long as the box and tree is correctly shimmed then most endplates will be usable.
Make sense

Dead right, "supposedly" line bored. Ever wondered why they're dowelled in position?RICSPEED wrote:supposedly the case and end plate are machined together at the same time so all baring faces are in the same position
Why people sell casings on ebay and separately list the end plate beggars belief!

I remembered when i bought a brand new 200 from a dealer only to find out that when i put my hub/wheel on there was movement,i replaced the end plate out of my 150 engine,no probs
2 1/2 years down the line but when i told the dealer he said that i should have sent the engine back,so my warranty was void....
