Lining a piston up freehand in the barrel

Any tips for lining the piston up in the barrel when off the engine

ie what reference marks do people use

eg the inlet side of the piston centralised to the two cyliner holes on the inlet side or :?:

There is only one way, and that's to do it on the engine. I guess you're trying to work-out where the ring gaps are, but you need to put it on the engine to be absolutely sure. Sorry David. You didn't want to here this, did you?

fair enough

i need to build a slave engine with just the tunnel bolted to a plate for these circumstances

built a slave engine, gods knows why i didnt do one years ago, makes life so much easier testing new ideas
