amal leaking

probs with my mk2 amal,when i leave the petrol tap turned on the float needle doesnt stop the petrol flowing and i end up with a downpipe full of fuel,have tried a new float needle but exactly the same,how can i cure this?it has the shallow type float so would putting a deeper float in sort it?
