Scoot hasn't been starting as well as it should lately and the spark looks rather yellow and feeble. Is this likely to be a knackered CDI

It's possible but have you tried a different plug/cap/lead? what sort of readings do you get off the green LT and pickup? I'd check all of those first as a matter of course as well as trying another CDI. IMHO it's always a good idea to have a cheap (£10) indian CDI as a spare/get you home for just this sort of situation.

was working on an old moped last week (1980's NOS Tomos 25yr old 50cc thing only 6 miles on clock!) good spark off plug against an earth, but not at the electrode, so changed plug, still nothing, changed HT cap, WOW what a strong spark now, nearly blew my mates finger 'off' PMSL

The very one. I remember our local Woolco/Woolworths selling them in the 80's for £175, and the local paper printing a £25 off voucher

got it started, mate nearly put it into the front of his company car as he revved it off the centre stand -centrifugal clutch, so wheel was spinning, PMSL as he tripped over the toolbox saving it. Then off down the road, 2 speed auto, funny as fook.
