Any more problems with Casa 186?

Not too long ago I was reading on here that another lad had problems with a Casa smallblock kit. Aparently the piston sort of melted...

A mate got his about a year ago and he set it up himself at first fitting the original crank (without even check it for alignment and banging it into place... yes I know bless him for that) and not replacing the bearings of the engine... (Fecking crazy I know) he also left the spring loaded crown and didt even touch the chain... (no comments) After doing about 100 miles on it, he came over one day and asked me if I could reconstruct his engine. Well I did as much as he left me, as he insisted on leaving the crown as well as the drive bearing.

My predictions came true when the noise coming off the drive hand side was unbearable. He managed to split the crown in half, completely destroy the 6004 as well as the 6305. So he asked me to rebuild the engine (again) but now entirely to my specifications. SO... I went as follow: Complete set of new bearings and seals, new MEC 58mm crank, new solid GP type crown and new chain. The kit finally worked beautifully.. It did for about 6 months. Then one day he was on the motorway and it came to a sudden stop. We took the engine apart and one of the ring pegs dropped. The rest you can imagine yourself.

Do you guys reckon the problem roots itself in the fact of not doing things propperly from the start? Or do you guys think that the problem is in the kit itself? His carburation was somehow ok, running a 22mm jettex and a casalambretta exhaust. Nothing brilliant but the engine did pull pretty well.

All the best,

J.

Really hard to say Jaime

Possibly just a faulty ring peg. I'd be inclined to get an oversize piston; rebore the barrel, and reassemble.

Its an ally kit so no rebores, just expensive relates.

Thats the problem, he got fed up with it and went down the standard GP150 barrel route. For using in Barcelona traffic is the best: low consumption and very reliable. He now uses the casa barrel as a door stop.
