Drive side bearing change?

I'm just about to fit a new crankshaft. I know I've got to fit a new mag side bearing, but is it necessary to change the drive side bearing? The one that is fitted is an SKF and has only done about 3000 miles. Can I just replace the oil seal and halite washer? It's not the cost of the bearing, it's having to drop the engine out to replace the bearing.
Thanks
Phil

Hello Phil, you dont have to drop the engine to replace the bearing mate, I do that on the floor without problems, you need a decent driver to do the job and it shouldnt be a problem.
However if you installed that bearing, and its life has been controlled by you yourself, I wouldnt mind leaving it. In fact, if it has been well taken care of and hasnt been abused I see no reason to replace it. Just replace the seal as that will not hurt at all.
All the best,
Jaime

Jaime,
Thanks, I did install the bearing and it hasn't been abused but I will give it a go replacing it with the engine in.

if it ain't broke then why fix it????..................you know what will happen.
I'd do as Jaime says- leave it and simply change the seal

Hi,when you knock out a crankshaft it puts excessive force on the inner bearing track of the driveside bearing thus shortening its life,i always change the bearing regardless, its a lot of work if you take a chance and it fails.

What Dean says its a different story, if you have suffered a crank seize then replace it. I didnt know if you where upgrading the engine or doing recovery from a massive seize.
