I’m stuck! Hopefully someone on here witth a brain can help me out :)

I’m trying to do an electronic 12 v conversion on a Vega

So far I have mounted a Pk stator on to a Vega stator plate and removed a Vega flywheel boss to mount on to a AF Rayspeed lightened flywheel.

What I need to know is at what position do I mount the Vega boss to the AF flywheel so that the s shaped magnets which cause the pick up to fire are in the right location in relation to the keyway in boss.

I have some information from another forum where this has been found by
joeyfont wrote:...forget about where all the bits used to go....
what i did was found the keyway position when the points started to open = 11 o'clock before tdc
put the boss on crank, then line the electronic flywheel up with pickup timing mark, bolt flywheel to boss... :study:   :affraid: :D
I don’t have a points based flywheel to allow me to follow this advice. Any other suggestions?

I have marked where the keyway was on the af flywheel before I removed its original boss. Would it be in the same place?

To start with you will need to find TDC by using the dead stop method and mark it on the mag flange. Then use a timing disc, mark the point that you want it to fire at, say 17 degrees BTDC. Fit the stator in so that the pickup is in roughly the same position as the points then fit the boss and align the flywheel with the firing point as near to the marks on the top of the pickup. With luck your holes will lign up but if not then it'll be a case of rotating the stator/filing slots. When you get it close, use a strobe.

PS, I've never done this myself, but that would be my plan if I was ;)

I was thinking along much the same lines myself but the snag is getting a timing disk that's the right size for the mag housing

Another thing I wondering is am I over complicating matters? The stator can only fit on the mag housing in one orientation - so that the pick us is in the same location as the points were about eleven o clock - also there is a limited number of orientations that the boss can be bolted to the flywheel. Only one of these allows me to roughly align the two lines on the pick up with the two lines on the flywheel????

If this is correct I know where to mount the boss and i just need a method of getting the right firing point.

If you PM me your email address, I'll send you a PDF of a timing disc which you can print off and stick to a piece of card, if it's too big you will probaly be able to reduce it on a photocopier.

if i remember correctly we had to move the magnets round one space as well as the boss to get it right on one we did years ago

Have a look here http://www.forums.ilambretta.com/viewto ... 4&start=60 You can see in the pics where to mount the boss. If you have a dial guage you can set the timing by using this http://www.scooterhelp.com/tips/timing/timing.calc.html
