Looking for a bit of help...

Newly rebuilt Imola 186 engine, genuine PWK 28mm carb and JL3 pipe. The problem seems to be that when I attempt to kick the scooter over, it starts, then cuts out. Upon examination, the flywheel seems to be sticking/grinding at certain points of it's travel.

Any ideas?

if lywheel is sticking it sounds like a twisted crank, did you check it before you fitted it?

1. crank not true
2. fly wheel not sitting correctly on taper or keyway
3. if the boss has been replaced, boss isn't concentric
take your pick

The crank like most of the engine components is a brand new item (MEC black) but has had the boss welded. Could this be the source of the problem?...if so, how do I go about fixing/truing the flywheel?

Apologies, I should have stated that the flywhel had it's boss welded up...not the crank as intimated!

It depends:

If the flywheel has warped with the heat frm the weld then it is all over for the flywheel.

If the welds can be ground back and the boss re-seated it might be salvagable BUT it may well damage the flywheel, the boss or both and as this is a critical part it might be wiser to get a new flywheel than risk the flywheel taking out the crank, stator and cowling if it lets go.

If you haven't already, take the plug out, and the flywheel off. Then get someone to gently kick the engine over whilst you stare at the taper of the crank. If the crank is as out of true as it sounds, this should confirm it before you move onto something else.

It's not especially scientific but it should confirm whether your crank is out of true, or your bearing knackered.

PS is it an AF light flywheel by any chance?

had this problem on an af flywheel turned out to be the magnets proud on the inside

I must admit after trying/verifying all of the aforementioned thoughts, the only one that remains is the magnets on the flywheel catching the stator. If this is indeed the cause, what is the remedy?

i had one like that it was an af light weight and the rivets where hitting the coils sort that part out and also it was hitting the pick upon the other edge so had to machine the depth of the flywheel had to laugh at af responce saying i would need to put on more flange gaskets to space it out so i said sure that would make it worse no it wont they said it will because its bolt in from the far side with the sprocket and if you move the mag flange out further with gaskets it will get worse a we must have sent you out the early type with out the spacer between the boss and fly wheel why the heel do they keep crap and send out crap and not just af other scooter shop do it to or is it just here they do it to because first you pay £25p&p then €18p&P return then another£25p&p thats £65 p&p just to get the right part that you ordered in the first place went of the issue there hope you sort it :fb:
