AIR FLOW TO CARB???

Hi all,
Ive almost finished my first restoration of my jet 200 with only a few little bits needing to be done.
With it being a Jet it does not have the scoop or hole under the seat or airbox etc.
I no longer have the vented toolbox door or toolbox with hole and want to know if there is another way of getting air to the carb without having to cut the sidepanels? as I have just had to fork out for a new pair.
Would a remote air filter connected to the rubber sleeve pointing down towards the bottom of the scooter suffice? Would there just be a build up off too much excess fuel spluttered out the carb over a long journey?
It may seem like a dumb question but Im not at all mechanically minded.
So what im asking is there any other way that anybody else would do this?
Its a 30mm Dellorto carb if that makes a difference.
