series 2 lights

i have a ser 2 with the 3 festoon bulb set up on the rear light, with the side light switch to 1 [side light] i have rear light centre festoon, and both brake lights, but with the headlight on and even full throtle ive no brake lights,its still running the original 6 volt system. was all working ok til the day of the mot so i have now only got daylight use on the mot. any ideas thanks.

electrical probs really are difficult to diagnose over a forum ,two things to start with are make sure all earths are good and add an extra earth to the rear light unit as if i recall correct the ally unit earths through the frame (not good ) also the rear stop switch is often to blame for lighting faults

My guess is as you are running totally original set up - points ?, battery? (if it's a UK bike). The brake lights and horn run of the battery not the magneto so revving it won't help you, is your battery flat? (ish)

I say this because my series 2 was the same until I put an electronic kit on it.

6 Volt and points was fine in the 60's and if you want to ride your pride and joy its more important than riding at night to be seen in daylight. You need 12V. while you are at it bring it into the 21st Century and add the extra wire to your stator and go full DC, You wont regret it

Ratty, as said above it's difficult to advise over a forum especially as we don't know what system you're running, battery or non battery? If non battery where is the brake light fed from, is it the type with the resistor in the headset? A link to a wiring diagram of your machine would be handy.

That is actually a system from the last century, the 1960's in fact.

cheers lads, its the wifes bike and she wont let me change things 12v electronic etc......lol. its a non battery system with the risistor in the headset. twin wire stop switch,black and pink. will run a new earth this week, thanks for the input has given me a few places to start looking. Dave.

If the brake lights work perfectly in the city lights position, then check the light switch to make sure that the switch pink is connecting to the switch brown when in the main lights position and that the pink is secure in the bulb holder.
