hi, sorry for being a bit thick !cos i know this question has been asked quite a few times already ! & i did try & find this topic in the search box first, honest !but i just wondered which way round the machined/offset cones go, ie which way should the slot be facing ? many thanks for any info. db

Slot at the top from memory... :? you can roatate them to where you want to get clearance as long as they are both in the same plain.... Someone may come along and correct me on this though.... :D

I had to use a real strong epoxy resin to keep them in as they moved once you tried to push (see smash) the rod through. Also well worth getting a dremmel inside them and cleaning them out same with the bar as the smoother the fit the less chance of cracking the glue and having to start again.
Also some people have added a small grub screw to hold it in place.

but is there another way to overcome the need to use them ?
they always seem a pain to fit and keep in position...

i think a grub screw is the most elegant way of doing it but the most work, but once done it is a quick way to release and tighten them up.

If you glue them in surely you are negating the reason of having cones and might as well have a solid tube

I fitted them holes to the bottom, farthest away from the frame giving greater clearance.

sillicone them in place......glues them and allows for movement and compression when tightened up

engine cones are ment to be loose/free thats why they have a split and are tappered as the engine bolt is tightened the mount centre pulls in against the cones and the cones will close up slighty to make it all tight and ridged , just a dab of grease will hold them in place .

maybe with std cones, they can twist when tightened up and leave your motor at a strange angle in the frame,i agree their split for a reason,so they can compress when tightened up,i fitted some once with a dab of grease and my rear wheel was hard over one side of the frame, the cones had rotated in different directions when i dropped the motor for inspection, they need to be bonded in place ACCURATLY,but not with something that goes off hard......silly cone!

i do use off set cones but mine havnt moved , maybe with off set cones , drill a small hole in the top (dead centre) and put in a small pin? this will keep the cones from moving around but still allow them to move inwards to tighten or silicone?
