I fancy having a crack at doing an MF quick small frame. Doing a Lambretta at the mo, so fancy a Smallframe next. So what I need to be thinking about is the current schools of thought on the tuning houses - Falc, Zirri, Quatrini - who is really cutting it? And where should I start, what engine is a good 'un to base this project on? I guess I am looking for a debate.

Well Max Quattrini works with the Zirri's so they're essentially one and the same.

The M1L series has a good following and truth be told it's probably all you'll need for the road. Falc makes the most power although the new Parmakit W-Force offerings will be pretty close. Falc does have the advantage of designing their barrels to run a 54mm stroke without any messing around.

Then there's the new Polini Evo's with the 52.8 mm stroke, haven't heard too much about them as yet but it looks nice.

Cases, well there's an arguement for earlier cases and later cases using different bearings but I'll side with Lauro from Falc's advice that the earlier cases are better.

So does it matter if I get a three speed? Say V90? Is V50 any good? Sorry to be ignorant, but I just don't know, I have never played with a vespa engine before.

In an ideal world what would be my first choise, and second come to that?

It won't matter if you get a 3 speed as the cases are the same. Obviously it'll have to be fitted with a 4 speed 'box and short top ratio or else the whole thing is complete waste of time.

It's not as easy as saying "ideal" choice, it depends on your needs and budget. A top level motor will easily reach £2,000 and fair well beyond on parts alone.

Kit say £450 - £600

Crank £150 - £450

Exhaust £300 - £500

Clutch and gearing £300 - £500

Ignition £200 +

Carb £100 +

This is off the top of my head and not looking at current prices, chances are I'm well under.

I know I will bleed money on this, having built a fair few specials before. But it is something a little different for me to get my teeth into, just need to get going. A mate of mine has gone to see what he has lurking in the back of his garage, so that might be a starting point. If you are cool with the help would you mind if I 'bounce' thoughts & ideas off you?

The first thread I would suggest you look at is the M1L thread by The Zapper. From what I can tell you is that no-one is unhappy with the M1L motors even at the more budget end of things but it's upto you and it's still possible to get respectable results out of the old Polini's and Malossi's.

Well, I got me self a V50 for the chassis for this project. And a cylinder idea. No doubt I'll be on here laters to try & pull as much help as I can.

hello if interested i have a new m1lr kit for sale on ebay
is the evolution of the m1l with bigger reedvalve i do have one of those tunned by franco tormena witch is a tunner in italy well known for kart and other two stroke but never been interested on marketing and publicity.
he had a articol on scootering magasin on march under drt articol.
denis recive all the information trow him for building new part etc etc even if sometime he doen t lissen.
any way my m1lr kit tuned does 101 mph with the tom tom. crasy to belive
