My clutch finaly went today, plates were ok as i checked them last week so must have been my "uprated springs" failing causing the plates to burn out goin up a steep hill in 2nd, as it started to slip badly, also had trouble selecting gear.

What clutch would anyone recomend to change for? my old one was surflex cork plates with uprated springs and st90 rock oil which done around 1200 miles.

engine wise its a gp150 lump with
sr200 kit ported with cut piston
46 15 gearing li150 box
28mm delly
nk pipe

I do give it rag quite often aswell would a 5 plate clutch solve it? and wound it fit in my existing basket? also what corks and thickness would i need?

A good four plate with big springs should be fine in that. How long did this last clutch live for?

put the clutch in it september last year, done around 1200 miles since then, when i had it out last week the plates barely worn, and springs were ok, fitted a 200 kit 2 weeks ago so its got more power and noticed it started slipping at high revs and had to slip it to pull away or it would stall and when trying to restart it the kick start would slip a couple of times, it could be faulty springs, but seing as im going to have to strip it again id rather put a stronger clutch even if its a bit over kill to save future hasle.

I have an SR190 which seems to go quite well. I initially had problems with slip, but then I bought a 5 plate surflex from Andy Francis and the clutch has been good as gold since. At £35, it seems quite cheap compared to some clutch solutions.

I used the springs that came with the clutch plates (cork and smooth plates). I have purchased a second surflex 5 plate clutch for my old-school 240 engine that I am currently building.

I think you could spend a small fortune on the "best clutch", but you might never come close to utilising this to its full potential. That would not represent good value for money.

Is that the Surflex 5 plate with the green 2.5mm plates?

Thanks for the reply knowledge, i have been looking at the surflex ones, theres a new 5 plate clutch kit with green race compound with 1.2mm thick steels knocking around on ebay for 60 quid, there not far from me either so i can pick it up and have it sorted tomorow.
Looked on the af site for the other one, do you reckon the green plate one will be good? or should i be patient and order the AF one :wtf:

A std cork four plate with strong spring should be able to cope with your engine. Thats all ive got in my RB20 2000miles and its been fine ( wish i could say the same about the cranks ive had two so far, and on to my third )
But ive got a gp200 gearbox ans 18 / 47 sprockets which give the clutch an easier life.

it is a very revvy motor, and was only slipping when opened right out just beofre i changed gear, and i do open it all all the time, plus its my dailey transport atm.

Once the clutch is sorted im thinking of putting an af clubman in nice bright orange on it to make it more rideable dailey, and the motor last longer as its always reving its nuts off, do have a reverse cone hanging around to :baddevil:
