I presume by the shear fact it has one that it's normal (ish) to have metal on the magnet?
I removed mine to change the oil and it had a fair bit on it, I did have a chain guide snap last year and filled up with fresh oil after changing it and the chain.
Is it safe to assume that the metal is from the chain guide episode or should I be stripping it down?

Oh, and the bloody plug sheared off when re-fitting
If it aint broke.........tinker with it.....

I generally change the oil again within a couple hundred miles of a major rebuild, there's always bits of debris floating about. It seems fairly normal to have a few bits stuck to it, more worrying is the whole christmas tree effect...
