Got my very low mileage 2003 PX200 out of the garage after standing for a year and the starter motor won't work (was working perfectly okay when I last used it). The battery is full charged and I have replaced the starter relay which was buzzing when the started button was pushed - the new one does exactly the same.

From what I have read it could now be a jammed starter motor, or a faulty clutch switch, starter button or safety interlock unit (behind horn cover)? Has anyone experienced the same buzzing problem - what part from the list is the most likely to be the problem? I have already tried banging each of the parts to see if anything releases, but the problem remains.

Any help appreciated - thanks!

Clutch switch would be my first guess,i think from what i remember this switch just bridges an earth to one side of the relay when the lever is pulled in,you can join these two wires together to prove if the switch is faulty,i do have a wiring diagram somewhere if you get stuck but a beer and a bbq are firstly on my mind :fb:

^^Thanks for your reply. I think the clutch switch may be okay as when I don't pull the lever in the relay doesn't buzz, but when I do it does buzz as though the circuit is being completed. I think it must be a jammed starter motor or a faulty the safety interlock unit (behind the horn cover)? Are these interlock units prone to going? Any idea which of the 4 wires leaving the unit I need to join to bypass it to see if that's the problem? A picture of the unit is here: http://beedspeed.com/product_info.php?c ... ts_id=6529 Thanks.

9 times out of ten, it"s the battery. even though it says fully charged, if its been left for a full year without use, the battery will be be goosed. then its usually the power lead on the starter needs a clean, or an earth problem. the interlocks and relays very rarely give problems. put a good battery on and see how it goes.

^^Thanks for the reply. The battery is only about 18 months old and it's been on an oxford trickle charger for the year so I don't think it's the battery? I've also tried jumping from my car battery with the same result - buzzing relay. I've also checked all the terminals/leads/earths etc., but I'll recheck these again.

Have you tried putting 12v from a battery straight to the starter motor to see if it spins?

A job for tomorrow! Is it just a simple matter of running a wire from the battery positive to the terminal on the motor, or do I also need to run an earth from the battery to the motor (bottom bracket - which I presume acts as the earth?)? Thanks.

Well after using my car battery via jump leads, it is the battery, despite my oxford charger saying it was fully charged. It had enough power to operate the horn, which was enough to convince me all was well, but obviously not enough for the starter motor. So problem solved, thanks everyone for their help. :bouncing:
