Breaking up at just over 6000 revs

I had my TS1 dynoed today at PSL, Kirkby, really just to sort the carb.

The good news was the the jetting was good to go, and the clutch is not slipping anymore. The bad news is that the breaking up at about 6100 revs is an electrical breakdown of some description.

Timing was set at 17 or 18 (can't remember) but was tested with a strobe at about 1/3 throttle.

It's a SIL electronic stator from Scooter Restorations. It's not been run before. All I've done to it is araldite some of the connections. Personally, I've never had any problems with SIL flywheels but I've never run one on a high revving TS1 before.

Stator is one of the later AF lightflywheels with the spacer washers fitted to address the misalignment issue. The pick up does not catch on the flywheel. Again this flywheel has not been used before.

My first inclination inclination was that it's a problem with the stator, possibly the pick up. Anyway, I phoned MB as their website mentions possible issues between AF flywheels and their bgm 120w stators. They believe, and I've seen a post on a scooter forum before about this, that it's the brass rivets on the flywheel that's causing the breaking up.

Any thoughts anyone before I go and buy another part that I don't need :D

try another CDi unit.

Then try another stator, I bought a brand new one from AF that had similar problems, then would just die at random intervals. It helps to swap over bits from a mates bike that you know runs ok

It's not just the pickup, it's the source coil too.

Look to see if the source coil has any un insulated solder points.

If the engine runs there isn't a dead short (which does happen with these flywheels if all the clearances are not properly checked) but getting intemitant problems with speed can be explained by the increased voltage in the source coil jumping to the flywheel via uninsulated connections between the coil windings and the solder conection to the wires.

Relax, give it a little while longer and the cheese boss and rivits will fall apart anyway.

Forgot to mention. I did substitute the CDI with a known working one. It was still the same.

I've been checking to see if the pick up is lined up right with the flywheel. As far as I can see it is. That said, as you can see from this photo I have found that the pick up is touching the flywheel on the inside. I've tried to move the pick up slightly, and use a bit of wet n dry on the contacts, but it's still breaking up.

I'll have another look at it tomorrow night, and try and get hold of a Vespa pick up too.

i used a bgm one on mine paul and got coil rewound at west country windings

Mark, is that a bgm 120w stator with an AF Flywheel?

no a bgm pickup on a sil stator but its with a sil flywheel so forget that . sorry :oops: ;)

the swiss brand pickups that ve sell seem fine mate been running one for a year now with no hassle on a mates bike
