A friend of mine wants me to have a go at painting/ airbrushing a design on one of his bike panels.

I am goin to get the part professionally primed and then put a base coat on using a rattle can but I was wondering what type of paint I can use to paint the design on? I would prefer to use water based paint such as artists acrylic so it's easier to clean but would I be able to put this on top of an oil based base coat/ primer?

Acrylic will be fine for brush work, but make sure it is UV stable or clearcoated, otherwise it will fade over time.

The plan was to paint my design on and then get it professionally laquered. My only worry was that if I put down an oil based primer or base coat such as cellulose would the acrylic go over the top or will it react? Same with putting the clear coat over the acrylic.

I know acrylic pretty much paints/ sticks over everything and I suppose once it's dry it has no water content?

I have access to an airbrush but haven't used one since I was at college and I'm leaning towards the brush/ acrylic paint method as I'm more confident and it looks easier to clean up than the airbrush!

Work backwards, speak to who will be doing the lacquering and find out what you can put under it.
