Crankshaft Question

Am rebuilding a P200E (1979) at the moment and was 'refreshing' my memory by reading the Haynes manual in bed the other night (as you do!) when I read that, when you replace the inner race for the bearing on the flywheel side, the race must sit 16mm above the shoulder of the crank.

Now I don't doubt Haynes and it is 20+ years since I messed about with Vespa engines, so assuming it's true then anybody got any simple/quick ideas for how I seat the inner race that distance off the crank shoulder please and get it nice and square?

I'm assuming there is probably some form of spacing tool...?

1.6mm more like. 16mm and you wouldnt get the casings together. a forked spacer is available (although hard to find).

the inner race is done just the same as a lambretta - vespa factory fit them with 0.5mm gap off the shoulder/flywheel to allow their factory puller to remove them. You can get a spacing tool off ebay. However i have seen them pushed fully down the shoulder with no adverse effect but when it comes to removal you need to use the grinder slot method as described in stickys book as the legs of the puller cant get under the race

i always install them 0.5mm from the flywheel

Yep,you're right as it reads "the outer face is 16mm above the shoulder" Any tips on getting it spaced accurately mate?

dont get to hung up on it - it can be installed with a large deep socket or correct diameter metal tube. Heating the race and slide it down until it stops. Support the crank and lightly tap the bearing race down the crank with the socket or tube if no forked spacer just put a feeler gauge down each side

you only need to space the inner bearing if you want to remove it at a later date with the prescribed tool.
if your not botherd and are happy grinding it off then dont bother and just smack it up to the crank !
