Wouldn't a rev counter be better for that?

You can get a cheap Sendec rev counter, try MB on the phone for this, or from Henry Armer, again by phone http://www.henryarmer.com/index.htm
GPS speedo apps on the iphone, but some are really crap, "Speed" is accurate or you could use "Speed Check".

For speed you could get a Garmin Forerunner 101 or 201 very good bits of kit.

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 200 w on ebay right now, cheap. click on my ebay link next to my name. Only thing is it's loaded with map for the US but the UK\Euro maps are easily downloadable from Garmin.

If you have a phone with GPS built in there is an app that you can download...
