Those who have been following my "What caused this" thread will know that I had my doubts about the red tanksealer made by http://tankcareproducts.co.uk/.

At the weekend, my tank started to leak around the tap. Over 24 hours stood in the garage it lost about 3 or 4 litres. Very smelly and a bl00dy nuisance. What has made it more of a disaster is that whatever this stuff contains. It has converted the petrol into something that Nitromors would be proud of.

It has taken the paint straight off the tank (commercial two-pack) and even turned the powder coat on the flywheel cover into a soft mush. In my experience, powder coat is nigh-on indestructible and yet a tiny quantity of this stuff dissolved in several litres of petrol (three times - it was my third tankfull) has turned it into paint stripper. Now I'm no chemist and I've no scientific evidence but when the properties of the fuel are so altered that they can strip paint (even powder coat), I wonder what the hell it's doing to my engine internals, especially any seals etc.

Now I've got to remove the s0dding tank, get another one, get it painted and then put it back again



(Edit: Just to be clear, the leak had nothing to do with the sealer, that was my own silly fault. Damned dodgy about the paint being stripped though)

You should take it up with the manufacturers I think. Sounds very dodgy to me.

Sorry to hear that armand thats sh+t, was it that beautiful Jet !. Yes it was the Jet and so you can imagine how pleased I am.

Now I've had time to calm down I think I'll conduct some experiments before blaming the sealer. I've got some powder coated odds and sods and I'll leave some in normal petrol and some in the the stuff drained from my tank. If there is a difference in reaction, then as far as I'm concerned, it's case closed.

Nightmare .. all mines powder coated and after my petrol spillage that ruined my graphics there where no change in the powder coating although not the amount or timescale yours will have endured, The only time ive had a problem is if ive drilled something as the heat from the drill bit re heats the powder coat and melts it...Hope you get it sorted soon mate...chin up.

I have used this very same stuff without any issue this far. I have spilt fuel all over the place while jetting the carb and although the fuel is stained by a "harmless" dye no sign of paint stripping.

A couple of things spring to mind, did you use the correct quantity of sealed for the size of tank, had the sealer evenly coated without build up in the bottom and had it cured properly before filling with fuel.

I would certainly be in contact with the supplier/manufacturer as they will almost certainly know why this has happened.

It does give this warning though?......

I'm sure that's referring to handling the product in it's liquid form and not after it's cured and sealed the tank.

i've used the same stuff with no issues so far,though its only been in 3 months, the pet seal i had i previously completely fell apart after a few years
