Running out of petrol....terrifying!

What happens when your scoot runs out of petrol/goes onto reserve at high speeds? Running a mild tuned 200 with 22 mm delly & it purrs like a kitten all day long.
I was on the way back from Sandford. On the M27 yesterday sitting at about 60-65, heard the tinny rattling asscociated with an impending heat seize & grabbed the clutch in quickly, coasted onto the hard shoulder, turned the tap to reserve & let the clutch out & rejoined the motorway where it once again ran fine to the next garage. But I really thought I was going to lock up/seize & cant work out why I cant run out of petrol/go onto reserve normally & come to a stuttering halt safely. Switching to reserve on normal A roads I hear the tinny rattling as described above but it wont threaten to lock up, only at high speeds.
Anyone else??

Get a low level warning light and never have that problem....I've got a 13 ltr tank the light comes on and i know i've got 25 mile of steady riding before i'm out of fuel totally.

High speed and running out of fuel (i.e. before you switch to reserve) means no lubrication for a short while. At high revs its going to cook your engine- simples!
If you make this a regular occurance I'd be inclined to check over your top end and crank

On reflectionI think a fast flow fuel tap and maybe increase the main jet to try to prevent this. Cheers.

How's this going to help you?
Bigger jet means you will get through your fuel quicker
FF tap is good but again won't help when you are going to run out.
The warning light is good, personally I know how much fuel I use so when it is getting close to reserve and I know a stop is due I flick it onto reserve so not having that moment you have experienced (easier on a long run where you are going from full to empty).

that wont help !! bigger main jet will just mean your fuel consumption will go up , and you may make it not so nice to ride

Best to have a long range tank, work out what miles you get from full to reserve and try to fill up again before reserve, or put it onto reserve before it's needed, it's not good to let it go on reserve all the time.

But running a slightly bigger main will make it run slightly cooler and give that bit of margin for when the fuel runs out.If its just mild tune and you just doing 60 as you said, this really should be ok. If you were doing 8000rpm and this happened then i can understand.

Put a really massive jet in then it'll run so lousy that you won't want to ride it...problem solved!
Seriously though, the other ideas are the better ones, warning light, know your fuel limits and stay on reserve setting when your cruising.
