Was wondering if there is a rust inhibitor you can apply to an exhaust before spraying with heat proof paint? took my fra nspeed off which is only 6 months old and the down pipe is covered in rust. Have teated the rust and am now back to bare metal. Is there anything out there that can take the heat of an exhaust?

I reckon the problem is down to the down pipe being shot blasted with shite off the front wheel, my Jl3 is suffering the same. It's what we get for ridding them in all weathers

I agree, i dont have a splash plate so there is nothing to stop road crap from hitting it. I have been looking at using heat wrap that are used on bikes and car exhausts http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Performan ... /2050/7910 then i read this, im not sure the catching fire bit would apply on a small 2 stroke but it stopped me from buying it last night.

I think i will go for the black 2 inch wrap and wrap it from the stub all the way to the slip joint on the end can. It will either look trick or sh&t, ill let you know when iv done it....

Hi,i think maybe you could acid dip the downpipe then get it zinc coated first then a thin coat of acid etch primer and finally heat resistant black spray paint,thinking of doin it on my franspeed soon as it too has some rust appearing

I think coaster has hit the nail on the head, what ever you coat the downpipe with your going to get impacts from the road and this will chip whatever you put on, then the inevitable rust appears.. This is one of the reasons im thinking off going with the heat rap option.

get it chromed as they are the only downpipes i have ever had that dont rust

yep, just fitted a chrome header for my Mileck on my engine rebuild. And you get that lovely goldy blue colour as a bonus.
As i said on the other thread, heat wrap can just retain moisture, and rot will happen without you seeing it... unless it's on alloy or stainless...

yeah yeah...get on with the lamasaki electrics.... Rather you than me, looked like my worst nightmare inside that tool box..

it probably could benefit from a tidy up

Why not make some kind of heat shield, like they do on cars, that would stop all the crap hittng the pipe, but allow enough airflow to cool the exhaust, would look lot nicer than manky old heat wrap !
