Any Scooterotica top hints & tips for doing the above ?
just had a head machined to match the profile of my piston and it has been also been recessed, mounting it on the barrel using long studs and nuts ,its amazing how off centre the head could be if you just bolted it straight on .
do you dowel it straight thru the fins or adjacent to two of the stud holes ?
Dowling a cylinder head.

Iv'e always dowelled the cylinder to barrel using a 4mm drill bit and bought the dowels from Websters (they sell tools and fasteners). first cover the gasket face of the head with a thin smear of engieers blue then fasten the head to the barrel using 4 barrel studs using 8 nuts, leave the nuts tight enough to hold the head in place but loose enough so that the head can be gently tapped ( rubber mallet PLEASE) to line up with the barrel until no engineers blue is visible looking down the barrel from the bottom to the head...  With the head lined up, tighten up two diagonally oppososed studs ( be very careful not to damage the spigot of the barrel when tightening the studs) to secure the head so it cant move. Then remove the other two studs, which if aligned correctly will fall out.  If dowelling a TS drill next to the stud holes the recessed part where the washers sit ( Of the studs that you have just removed) in the head but not too close to the barrel wall. Drilling just deep enough to secure the dowels into the barrel.....  If dowelling a cast Iron barrel, drill through the outside of the barrel fins about 10mm from the edge of the barrel opposite the transfares through the head and into the first two fins of the barrel...  Before drilling make sure the drill is square to the work piece, Use a good sturdy pillar drill, and dont try this with a hand drill cus if the dowells are not squared up to the head you wont get the head back on over the dowells
thanks for that,do the dowels stay in the head or the barrel when disasembled ?
