idealy the sleve should be slightly conical to ensure a good seal with the retaining springs

Does this fit/slide over the slip joint? If so could well be worth looking into. Anyone used this before?

i just meant a lot of high end systems have joints in the pipe that taper slightly so that under tention of the exhaust springs will pull tight ,i not suggesting that yours is like this but this is an example of why it is done ,to stop gaps at the joints ;)

Ive heard that a small section piece of cycle inner tube can cover this area and do the job, or cut the finger off a neoprene glove.

As already suggested mountain bike inner tube cut into a section about 40mm long.

Been using it for a few years now with no problems, every 2-3000 miles replace it with a new piece.

Does't the rubber just melt?

No, not on the rear slip joint.
