my back brake has stopped stopping me.
I haven't taken it apart yet, but feels like the rear seal has gone, so the hardly used brake shoes will probably have gearbox oil on them...
what's the best way of cleaning these ? an angry mate suggested thinners ?
I was thinking about popping them in the dishwasher ?

try dishwasher and let me know mate as i have a few sets i want to do

I have got some old worn shoes too, I'll rub some oil onto them, put them in the dishwasher and see how they fare...

I had a long running oil leak problem on one of the rear drums on the Marcos, I lost count of the times I cleaned the shoes with thinners and a bit of sandpaper. Always seemed to work and they#re still on there 5 years on.

The oil does'nt seem to penetrate to any depth

Speaking of brake shoes, does anyone know where decent brake shoes can be found these days.
Ever since asbestos was banned for use in shoes they are next to useless.

indian brand called mikato or something like that i can lock mine up at 40mph , id say the biggest prob is becouse there not set up right i spend about 1hr doing mine you cant just put a set in and hope for the best you will need to use or make a skimming tool i put the details on this site in an earlier thread

One trick my old Dad taught me from when i first had a car....the rubbers had gone and leaked oil onto the brake shoes and were really sodden........boil them in an old saucepan with OMO or some other washing powder for twenty minutes....they will come out looking brand new......

so dishwasher should work, will try it tonite.
OMO - there was a bag lady in the town where i grew up we used to call Omo.
kids are cruel.

just did a set of casings in dish washer
came out very clean
its going to take all night to clean out dish washer
