Hi, this has probably been answered a thousand times, but opinions are always changing, i am about to buy a kit tomorrow. So here are my questions.
Its a gp crank running a scooter of no more than 16bhp, do i need a lightened flywheel ? i understand to use existing cowling (jet) i will either need a short fin or one that has been machined down...does it matter which ? Are the indian stators still dodgy ? are the bgm stators now believed to be dodgy ? If ok 80w or 120w ? i have heard (although have not seen them ) that the indian stators are good when rewired or better still when replaced with vespa coils ? I think the general feeling on regulators and ht coils is ducati..am i right ?

Cheers John

No, you probably don't need a lightened flywheel. There's nothing wrong with the standard flywheel. Short fin or one that's been machined down, it's the same difference. As regards the stators if it's got a perfectly good SIL one then bung it on and use it. Why waste money when the original might be perfectly good? In practice I don't think you notice a great deal of difference fitting a 120w BGM one anyway. Yes; Ducati regulator and CDI unit are what you need.

If you're shopping for one don't be seduced by how cheap it is. Spend a bit more and get a good one and it will pay dividends. And pay attention to the centre boss and note where the keyway is. It should be just to the right of the rivet or it's not electronic.

Beedslow do one that's marginally lightened with stator for £155. Mine came with a 120w BGM stator. Mine seems fine on my GT engine.
I took off an old AF flywheel/stator. I thought a heavier one might suit the engine a little better. The only difference I can fathom is that it's killed the acceleration.
You may not need a lightened one, but don't count it out if one comes along at the right money.

points are good IMO!

Running 6v points on a Muggy for the last 5 years- no problems at all.

Chris ( no doubt thats the kiss of death there then :D )
