Could it be 'Pinking' not rattling ??
172"s rattle like f@@k at tickover.
Thats true-don't worry about it.
That's a ridiculous statement. What makes a 172 rattle any more than any other engine size ?

I always used to teach my students that "cos" is not an answer but in this case it's going to have to do. Why does the 172 rattle? 'Cos it does!gadgetman wrote:That's a ridiculous statement. What makes a 172 rattle any more than any other engine size ?
Putting the rubber bungs back in the cylinder and head fins does reduce it a fair whack though.
Nemo saltat sorbius, nisi infanus est.
not a ridiculous statement, just true. its probably something to do with the very thin walls of the barrel , making a tinny , rattley sound at tickover seem worse. some other kits do it as well, DR180"s are renowned for it. you have altered/ got a new cylinder head for it i guess? MMW heads from SIP are great quality, if a liitle expensive. puts the kit up to 400 pounds -ish, but worth it in my opinion.
