side stands

now I have cut my rear runners down, the oe centre stand looks a bit messy up, and bangs against the lip I made on the rear of the runners.
So, i was thinking about fitting a sidestand.
Probably get a motorbike one and make it fit onto the front LH frame strut.
what needs strengthening to do this ? I was thinking I'll probably weld whatever the stand pivots on onto the strut, then add some metal up to the centre tube and weld it there too ?
any pics of underneath with side stands fitted would be welcome.
any other pros or cons of people's experiences of using a sidestand ??

Thinking about it Byron, you won't need too much strengthening as there isn't that much weight on a side stand, it's not taking the full weight of the scoot like the center one does.
It will be a pain in the arse changeing either of the wheels though

Hi Byron,
You're going to have to strengthen the point where the floor strut meets the frame tube. I've got sidestands on two lammies and both have had a plate cut and welded in to offer support to the floor strut. I learned the hard way when my Custom GP, fully loaded up with rally gear for Holiday in Holland ended up on it's side p1551ing out fuel at the Eurotunnel terminal a few years ago when the floor strut parted company with the frame tube!

cheers Matthew, that's what I was thinking
your experience sounds like one to avoid
is it enough to just strengthen the join, or is there a need to have a plate going as far as the end of the strut where the force will be ? I may well do that, in a typically over-engineered english style

Also what i always do ,when fitting a side stand..........is to weld in a tube between front and rear struts...........this helps spread the load /stress.
