Does anyone know of any ways of removing the nut, without the use of a clucth holding tool? Without causing damage to the casing etc.

you can bodge it with a screwdriver but................................

you may either break the casing, or more likely bend the "spider"

The tool is the correct way and is relatively cheap

Sorry!

You can make a holder out of an old metal plate a short length of metal and a bolt. Mine has half a cable clamp from a Vespa loosly bolted to the plate. The clamp has holes at both so the other end drops over a casing stud.
