Flywheel movement

My flywheel has a slight amount of up and down movement in it. You can't really see it moving but I can feel it when I grab the flywheel and push up and down. The bearings are decent german ones and have only done a thousand miles, if that.

Is a small amount of play acceptable or is this another job I've got to look forward to.

If it's a tiny amount of bearing movement it's not a worry. But it may be wise to replace the bearing if you need to open the engine in the future. If the movement is eminating from the boss to casting fit, it could spell danger.

I suppose if I'm going to do it it's better to do it pre-season. I've had the flywheel off and its definately the crank moving rather than the flywheel coming apart or moving on the taper.

i hate replacing those bearings, its a right pain in the parts :(

I would at least check that the play is not due to loose rivets that hold the boss to the flywheel,these can definetly work loose an cause movement.

I have heard of the crank being a loose fit in the inner track, bearing lock should sort that, worth checking.

Fitted a new mag side bearing today. The old bearing was definately shagged and the stator side seal was blowing. After fitting the new bearing etc there was no movement at all and much quieter. Went for a quick blast, took the cowling off and the f%^$ing think is moving again. I blew a piston a while ago and it looked like there was no other damage. Guess I was wrong! :(

Time for a new crank and bearings etc. I might go nuts and get a lightened and balanced flywheel too. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Indian one currently fitted is oval.

No wonder I'm always skint!
