Just out of the garage after a sat mornings painting, quite pleased with the results...
I was spraying filler primer this time, I etched it a few months ago.
First attempt at spraying apart from doing a firebird freestyler bmx with rattle cans in the late 80's
Just using an Aldi compresser and the spray gun that came with it....


Got a clothes rail off ebay for £12 to hang parts on, highly reccommended


I'll have to go over bits again as some are a bit patchy and a small drip on the forks , I'll have to sand this out and redo



Thought it might be a bit cold for spraying at this time of year
Old wallpaper pasting table came in handy too



When am spraying the colour i'll hang just 1 or 2 parts up at a time and concentrate on getting a good finish

looking good so i take it the compressor is up to the task then

Seems to be ok yes, it does click on to refill often but i'm in no rush

may have to invest

As it happens aldi have these on sale on Sunday 22nd Feb, same compresser but different accessories - I got 2 spray guns with mine, the ones on sale on sun only have one

what sort of paint are you using?

Hi piatti very interested in what your doing as i'm at that stage either i shell out for someone to do it or have a go myself which i'm leaning too..

you got any pointers to what you've done,

what paint did you use?
what prep work have you done?
were did you get your paint from and was it expensive?
how many filler coats did you do?

any advice would be very much appreciated..

Hi Lee

The most important thing to buy first is a mask with the correct filters to protect you from paint fumes.

I can recommend a Sundstrom SR 100 half mask with the following filters – gas filter SR 315 (ABE1) conbined with a SR 510 particle filter plus pre filters (P3). You change the pre filter every time you paint.

This combination will provide sufficient protection for up to 40 hrs in an environment where Isocyanates occur. I already had the Sundstrom mask as I used to have to wear one for work.

they sell the masks as well, you may be able to pick up a mask from ebay for cheaper, but always buy new filters – I have a spare SR510 particle filter and some pre filters if you require them.

Everything I painted was stripped down to bare metal by myself using nitromorse, which is fine if your on a tight budget and have plenty of spare weekends. Next time I’d look into getting everything acid dipped though.

I did some very small body repairs to dings on the legshields and frame loop. The side panels were a mass of small dents and ripples were previous owners had tried to repair. I spent hours trying to fill and sand these but eventually had to pay someone to sort them, there’s an art to getting bodywork spot on and I’m afraid I didn’t have it…

Before painting I washed everything down with paraffin using scotchbrite to get rid of any nitromorse residue left over.

Finally before spraying the first paint, which was etch primer, I wiped everything with thinners and left to dry. After this I only handled the parts to be painted with gloves on.



The Etch primer was £8.80 (1 Ltr)

With this you also needed Etch primer activator (1 Ltr) £5.20

I used 2 tins of etch primer - wouldnt need that much again, it was just it was the first time I had ever painted with a spray gun etc.

The mix ratio to this was 2:1
So that’s 2 parts etch primer to 1 part activator

I also bought 5L of cheap thinners £5 for cleaning the spray gun and to wipe down panels prior to the first paint, also a pack of paint strainers £1.20







The etch primer was easy to do, your not trying to build up a lot of coats with it, more of make sure everything has good coverage.

The filler primer was £12 (1 Ltr) which also came with a hardener

Also needed was thinners £5 (1 Ltr) (not the cheap stuff)

The mix ratio to this was 4:1 plus up to 30% thinners
So that’s 4 parts filler primer to 1 part hardener + thinners

And thats were I’m up to at the moment, just need to finish the filler primer, then I’ll start on the colour for the internals – fuel tank, airbox, flywheel cowling etc
Dont forget VAT was added onto these prices at 17.5%

my place of work uses's the same make of mask but uses the filters required for welding purposes, if your selling what you've got left over then let me know

1, how many coats of filler and primer did u use?
2, have u rubbed down the primer after spraying to your parts?
3, so i take it your planning to use 2k paint then. is it easy to use?
4, ive priced up from my local paint supplier for a lambretta, i'm looking at doing mine in ford st orange and was quoted 110 quid for every thing i need excluding sanding paper not bad i thought

i've had my gp fully blasted and etch primed and basically at the stage you've just done the priming!!

keep posting as i can't wait to see how you get on..
