very hard compression !

My mates LIS3 compression is so hard that its broke 2 kickshafts !! the engine is LI150 with a SR175 kit , you need a right leg like Arnie to kick the thing over ! once it fires up it seems to run ok ! Any ideas why its like this or what to do to sort it out ?

It sounds like the back of the kick start shaft is rubbing on the clutch top plate. As lambretta clutches are made from pressed parts they seldom run true or concentric. This means as you kick the engine over there is a slight wobble in the top plate. There is really minimal clearance between the top plate and the flange of the kick start shaft (where it contacts the inside of the side case).

Check the kickstart shaft has float in it. you can do this by dry fitting the shaft with no main return spring or the plunger mechanisum. When the side case is bolted up you should be able to push the shaft in and out. Rotate the shaft to different positions through and repeat. If there is no movement, then it is contacting the top plate and thats your problem. If you have changed shafts for new pattern shafts and not ground the back edge of the flange then it is a wonder it works at all (you'll probably have a pretty knarly top plate by now and metal shavings in the oil).

I check for rubbing a little differently.
I paint some machinists layout ink(blueing ink) onto the top plate and k/s shaft. Then mount up side case without gasket and only four nuts then turn the motor over with the kickstart by hand a few times. Remove side case and look for any marked areas in the layout fluid. If there are none, job done. When you re-assemble with the gasket, there is even more clearance.

I can definately see where doing the float test without assembling the plunger and spring would save some work though.
That's not going anywhere...
