Clutch cable outer conundrum !

Went for a spin today all ok , but then noticed my clutch lever didnt 'snap' back to normal position after changing gear. My first thought was the inner had gone but, no.Turns out the outer had pulled through the gear change housing stopping the lever going back properly ! So therefore a new outer required. I would be grateful for any tips on how to stop this happening again and the easiest way to replace the outer without too much grief taking off bodywork etc. Cheers.

has that cable been fitted a long time or only recent? its just some clutch housings seem to require a top hat on the end of the cable, to locate them and stop it from popping through?

The cable was on when I got the scoot [last year] but its a 'Nam nightmare' which Im doing up bit by bit. The old outer didnt have an end cap thingy fitted so Im hoping that if I fit a new complete cable a top hat wont be necessary.

...end cap n grease...if its a heavy clutch there is a standard vespa cable end part, you need to file it down a bit so you can change gears.... ;)

Are you sure the housing is not worn causing the cable to pull through ??

Fitted new outer cable today including vespa top hat, what a ball ache having to strip horncasting and mudguard due to a cable tie halfway up the forks ! Packed the housing with grease and jobs a good un ! My clutch lever action now is as smooth as a virgins tw*t [if memory serves] Cheers for all advice.
