Noticed last weekend petseal in my petrol tank coming away... just had a look in tank tonight and there bits floating on the top of the petrol, Its been done about 18 months and thought I had been ultra meticulious but guess I hadnt..

Is it true this stuff can cause major problems to top end if it gets through..?

i have a similar problem of it flaking away from the tank walls. it is not broken off though.it will need attention some time in the near future but for now i figure the filter in the tap & banjo of the carb will play their part.

If you rely on that theory you will surely knacker your engine due to fuel starvation.
This problem is becoming more common these days and requires attention. You can get a product from Tank Care Products to remove the old Petseal. I'm afraid it's tank out and ths stuff reduces the Petseal into small flakes that can then be removed through the filler cap. You can then use a more modern flexible type sealer if you wish.

Tank care products to remove and their tank sealer to er seal....there is another one recommended by 'pride' or Capt Pugwash I think......

We stopped using tank sealer where I worked because of the exact same problem. Not good when someone just dropped some large on a paint job. Usually took about 18 months
I know a few will say it's all in the prep, but personally I wouldn't chance it and pretty much won't work on scoots who's tanks have been sealed without a big discalimer on the bill.
The trouble with it is when it does start coming loose, you can't remove it and weld up the tank. Always start with a clean, steel tank I reckon.

Petseal is crap, it can't seem to cope with modern fuels and as a result it slowly breaks down giving lumps of the stuff in your tank, which goes on to block your filter or make it's way into your engine - not recommended...!

I asked a professional classic bike restorer (he does work for the National M/C Museum) and he recommended a product called POR-15, i did a tank with it 3 years ago and it's still perfect.
