Holed the piston today on the way home from Catcliffe.

We filled up at Woodall services on the M1, and because I was to lazy to push the scooter to another pump I put normal unleaded in. another one of our lot filled up at the pump next to me and also used normal unleaded in his TS1. His TS1 has done 1000's of miles in its current setup.
this is it.

After about 35 miles he holed his piston with out any warning and I holed mine about a mile later. to much of a coincidence in my opinion. The fuel at those pumps must have been shite.

This is the video, it shows Nige loosing power and slowing down, he carried on for a couple of miles before his holed. and it shows mine suddenly popping.

I've stripped it down, taken the crank out and cleaned all the pieces of piston out of everywhere. It did have a small air leak on the exhaust gasket but it wasn't big enough to course the engine to over run so I doubt that coursed the hole, im sure it was the fuel. The barrel is being re-bored on Monday so the new Wiseco piston I bought a few months ago fits and if I get it all together in time I'll have to run it in during the lands end to John o Groats trip next weekend, which is good as ill get it done in one weekend but bad because the new piston im using is a bit of a test due to it having no reed windows, Ill be cutting a big curve into the bottom of the inlet skirt and hoping that if the engine wants to suck it will be able to through the boyson feeds when the piston skirt is closing the inlet as the boyson are above the piston face.

neat hole

If your filling up at that services avoid pumps 10 and 12

That is proper odd considering that the earlier picture of the head you sent me several months ago was entirely different to with, in fact it was totally opposite. Mind you, the checking the blanking plug condition would give you a much better idea of head condition than checking the spark plug colour!

Rich its been running well, As you know ive done 1000's of miles on it. It went tits up after filling up at that services. the stuff in the head is molten aluminium from the piston crown stuck to the head!

ive got video from the whole day and it wasn't running like that before the fill up.

Sorry to hear you holed your piston. Do you think the hot day played any part in this ? And the lack of cool air.

no, if the barrel had got hot it would have seized being iron. pistons hole due to the fuel igniting at the wrong time.
Normally a hole in the centre of the piston, is indicating the ignition timing to high, because it will spark the plug to early & then theres a big ball of burning fuel right in the middle and it melts the piston.
The timing was still set at 16 degrees, the stator had not moved and the flywheel had not spun on the chamfer, it could be that the plug f@@ked up but its more likely that the octane of the fuel we both used was too low, or had a very high ethanol and therefor water content.

would it be possible keep a sample of the fuel from both bikes and see if a friendly scootering journalist would get it analysed and do an article.
its not often you have video footage of a an event like this and with the clutch in checks etc it gives a weight to the case it was fuel related.
cant see two plugs failing so close to each other.

A couple of pics of the damage to the blue TS1 230 that holed at the same time as me in the video.

his hole is just like mine, a small neat hole with no wider crater around he sides which would indicate bad set up burning a hole slower in the crown.
