my advice an its not worth much is dont do exactly the same then expect different; if somits not rite in y mota a new piston alone won't fix it; sure will get it running but whatever made it pop if y not looking deeper it might pop again; if y know any high milage road ridin scooterist that build tune and set there own scoots if y can get them to help ya,

I'd sell it. No offence Tony but a broken down scooter is part of scootering. i don't think many scooterists will have gone through life without a few "major" breakdowns. If you're struggling to live with it now, your second breakdown may send you into a very dark place. If you want to keep in the scootering scene but dont want the hassle, get a vespa (untouched engine). If you stick with Lambrettas, get an understanding bank manager or the Samaritans number.

Holed 2 pistons in a month (rapido 225 both times miles from home), vespa gearbox dis-intergrated riding through a City centre (oil every where!!), gearbox siezed on a lambretta, 2 indian stators in 6 months, siezed numerous Lambrettas, rear hub broke on motorway, cruciform (Vespa) changed on field 300 miles from home to make it rideable, etc, etc........scooters eh !!

I intend to knock the timing back a bit, although when I spoke with CamLam they reckoned 17 degree was fine.

going to up all the jetting a touch, but more importantly make sure that I alter the way I ride

soon as I can afford it, I want to do Wassel conversion, battery, and then an EGT guage, maybe I can learn things from this.

thought about it long and hard last night, went out shooting this morning, a very rare opportunity for me, but it gave me time to think, maybe I should get the Samaritans on speed dial as I want to keep playing with scooters

I love riding the Lambretta, its great fun, but need to change my riding style and also slow down LOL
heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it does fail, hit them with it!!!

Lambrettas can be expensive to run, Fact!

No offence meant but If everytime yours go's pop It sends you into a state then perhaps you need to either go back to bikes or flog It and buy one those LML things.

ive been chuckling to this thread for a few days now...only for the fact that weve all felt like you at some stage Tony...only friday my friken low fuel led did not come on and after years of riding lammies i ran out of fuel for the first time...
mind i didnt hole my piston...as Adam said going to reserve or running out of fuel does not eat through your piston crown in that short time
but even so for a split second at the side of the road i thought why do i bother..
BUT lambretta riders NEED the never give up attitude to own one..if we didnt we,d all be riding them bloody pig ugly vespa autos...
owning a kitted or tuned lammy is an engineering challenge.
personally i think you have probably got to the bottom of it with the advice on here,upjet,retard, new piston.....easy!!! :mrgreen:

Tony, fyi you do not need a battery to run an EGT. They are not a fail-safe guarantee against seizure, but do show changes in op temperature. An EGT + CHT indicator show a fuller picture. Just make sure you don't geat so distracted by them you forget to look where you are going!

I think you are tackling the causes thoroughly, The main jet looks small to me too. I'd re-appraise that and get 110, 108 and 105. Start with the richest and settle one the one below 'too rich/spluttery'.

When you say it was running out of fuel...... So you kicked reserve with your foot....... Was it actually out of fuel and just about to go on reserve?...... That would have caused fuel starvation possibly ... .??? When you flicked it to reserve have you ever tested the fuel flow in reserve position as well as the normal on position?...
