Things have slowed down a bit at the bodyshop for the moment
Anyway, I've managed to get the headset the way I wanted by obtaining and restoring a genuine light rim that was badly corroded and several holes drilled in it. My plater silver soldered them up and then heavily copper plated it prior to chroming. He had some problems with the new chrome bubbling up, but persevered and did a pretty good job IMO. These look chunkier than other S3 rims and fit nice too...


The other thing I needed to sort was the reflector. I got a couple of quotes in excess if £100 for re-silvering


Again my man came to the rescue and chrome plated it for the princely sum of £20

Who's your man? I need this doing to both my series 1 reflectors and it looks like a top job.

I thought there was a reason that reflectors were silvered as opposed to chromed?

possibly but i cant think of a good reason why chrome is not as good other than there may be a slight diffraction of light and on a lammy i guess you will not notice anyway

Ive been racking my brains since Mike posted the picture as I am also sure this is a no no..but can I feckers remember why..the only conclusion I can come to is because its so shiny bright and the standard backing would be slightly duller ???

I could be talking out me arse of course...no change there then Red would say

if you compare the two pics again ...the silvered one (where good) the reflected image is sharper where as the chromed one is slightly blurred ..although this could be down the mike not being so steady with the pic taking

I would imagine that silvering would be the purest reflection as I believe it's the same process used to make mirrors, hence the massive price to refurb them. My plater did say that he usually nickel plates them, I didn't ask why he chromed mine. I'm sure there are reasons/pros and cons, but I doubt there will be any visible difference when used with its 47 year old lense

It must be something to do with the way in which it reflects light. But as you say it's hard to see what difference it would make in real terms. I think the actual ribbing in the glass is probably just as important. I have a genuine Italian GP glass and recently fitted a cheapo Indian pattern one out of necessity and the spread of the light is very different.
