Interesting post......'Playing Devil's advocate' what real advantages does a 5 speed box provide over a 4 speed ? Conscious of the cost of buying and fitting one, is there a well earned advantage OR is it marginal . Not looking to knock the 5 speed but wondered if its the way forward ?

Most people who've had one seem to like them, even some of those that's broke them.
They give you ratios that allow you to stay on the power more, overcoming the big gaps between third and fourth in some four speed boxes and stop you chasing it. The overall final ratios in top gear are not that much different so it's not like you gain any overall speed advantage from the extra gear, you just get there nicer.
I think you'd need to weigh up whether you could justify the cost against the perceived benefits.

Is there also a FB link to the 2 speed Doncaster gearboxes I heard about the other night?

depends how you drive,if your local fast ball out rider then no a close ratio is what you need, for the fast man that does the long distance the 5 may be easier to cruise at higher speed on the motorway if it is windy or uphill then drop down into 4th at the same revs,,big difference in the cash another factor is if you have a revvy engine with a narrow power band the 5speed will be nice with correct sprockets!
