Sorry mate,i just got those figures from Websters manual so can only go by what he said at 7200rpm.As ive said,i only talk from experience (not theory) with Taff pipe on a TS200 going to rallies but guess the Gods were on my side.Special X wrote:Think you'll find it's 70.4 mph Soosh which is what I said earlier. With 4.8 it'll have a theoretical max of 76.5 (not realistically acheiveable with 22 stone and luggage) and a cruising speed of 64 mph with drops to 60 mph (at over 7000 rpm in third) every time you hit an incline or headwind. . . . . . . . 5.2 seems more relaxed to me.soosh wrote:So with 5.2 you will end up with a TS that pull well but max out at 68mph. Right on!
Sprocket choice help needed.

MOOOOO....
CakeAndArseParty
No!!!!! Not the GTS!
This is an excellent thread and evryone is right in a way in my opinion.
The way i see it.....we buy TS1's or high revving kits to achieve top speeds of near 80 or just over 80mph and this is totally achievable with say 5.2 gearing and a race pipe that hits 8500rpm or over as this is what the kit was designed for however we all want to go to rallies and cruise between 60 and 70 without the high revs and changing up and down through the gears to keep it in the power band when you hit hills etc. To achieve this some of us go for pipes like the Taffy or JL3. If you set your gearing at 5.00 or 5.20 these will pull you like a train but top out out around 70mph or just over but you will cruise all day long between 60 and 70 and not be constantly changing gears because the power band is so low down on these pipes.
In my opinion if you gear at 4.8 or lower a lot of the time you start to get the same issues of changing down all the time again because most heads that you buy for TS1's or similar now have a margin for safety because of low octane fuels (lower compression) and this does effect torque greatly!
So in my opinion if you want to errr on the side of caution gear at 5.00 to 5.20 if running a torquey pipe and you want to cruise all day at 60mph. If you want to tell your mates it will do nearly 80ish down the pub, gear it at 4.8 but be aware (depending on set up) that you may well be changing down or falling off the power up hills, against winds etc or fit a race pipe, gear at 5.2 and thrash it like a fecker!

Right my tuppence now lol!!
Real world driving here 4.8 on indian box, standard ts1 225,30mm delly flatslide, franspeed race tops at 8k on my rev counter in 4th.
Headwinds don't affect it or hills unless we're talikng big gradients, pulls well right through the rev range.
My findings when running a jl3 on ts with 5.2 was did not like it at all, on motorway terrible sitting there revving it's nuts off and only doing 70ish same on Aroads , changed gearing and more civilised.
Works for me folks, but everyone to their own

It's not just the pipe that allows tall gearing to be pulled comfortably for example if you tried an mb head and then an af head (the one that has a large combustion chamber) you would be surprised in the difference in torque. I have run both. Compression has a huge effect on low to mid range grunt so you cant just say any TS1 will pull 4.8.
So it is down to careful consideration of set up on what gearing the bike will pull but there is nothing worse in my opinion than finishing your engine, setting off for a rally and finding that its over geared.

Hell no! You wouldnt do that.....would you? You would suss that out before?nelson pk wrote: but there is nothing worse in my opinion than finishing your engine, setting off for a rally and finding that its over geared.

But you would expect a std TS to eat 4.8 with a Taff pipe, thats what they were built for.
