...................So........... I'll very shortly have my CDI's and Stators back from Colin (Coaster) who very kindly tested and cleaned them up. Hopefully I'll get a chance at the weekend to have another go at getting the LI running.

Hello Billy, thanks for the offer. Much appreciated. Hope you and the family are well. Been quite a while since I've seen you (or anyone for that matter)!

OK, here goes, few years ago, had similar problems myself.
Seemed OK, would run for 10 miles or so then die.

Leave an hour orso and started OK again

This happened time and time again.

In end for differnet reasons was using engine for another project and was gonna get powder coated.
When had stripped casing down noticed a hairline crack across the casing , where the transfer port is on mag side (ie. the weakest spot on a casing)

Had it welded up and that engine still running years later no problems.

If I hadn't been getting casing powder coated would never have seen crack !!

worth having a quick check if you can

Soz, I have not read all pages of this thread but have you tried running this with the loom's green to the CDI disconnected? Note that I am not asking whether you have tried a different CDI, which is different to the issues that I'd be looking to rule out by disconnecting the 2nd green.

See PM Rob, the post office have just delivered your parcel back to me ffs  I'll get it back in the post tomorrow.

Colin

For those following this thread, I tested 3 stators one of which (a BGM) returned perfect readings, a newish Indian one that gave good readings but there were signs that the green coil wire might have been rubbing on the flywheel as the bobbin was higher than the pickup (fettled to make connection lower) and an old SIL stator that had an intermittent reading on the LT coil which turned out to be a broken connection to the earth tag which was also loose (earth tag tightened and coil wire re-soldered. All connections and wires Araldidted to prevent movement and a fair dollop of coil lacquer applied the LT coils for good measure.

I also tried both of Rob's CDI's on my own scoot and thrashed them fairly hard but they performed perfectly. Can't say if Rob's problems have been electrical but when he is eventually re-united with them at least he'll know where the problem ISN'T ;)

Just to add, (if I haven't already)!

This problem started when the engine was in my GP a couple of years ago. It gave up and never started again. Then, when I finally got a chance to get to work on trying to get a Lambretta back on the road, last year, I put the engine in the LI and got a couple of months of trouble free running. Then it stopped with the same probelm from 2 years ago when the engine was in the GP. Spluttering to a halt and occasional spluttering start for a few seconds like it was heavily flooded. (different carbs have been tried).

A post from my blog a couple of months from when it died..
It’s now into September and the LI continues to baffle me. I’ve now got the Mugello 225 fitted with the old JL3 and a 26mm Dellorto.

I got it running today and revving quite rich sounding, but still revving well. Went back to it a few times, starting it up. Then it just cut out and died.

Tried bumping it and nothing….
