Piston skirt.debris jamming the crank.
Don't force it or you could break the crank housing.

Assuming he'd have said if the piston was damaged in any way when you took the barrel off.

First rule of this game is Asume nothing.
First time I lost part of the piston skirt the break was so clean it was hard to tell anything had fallen off.

Looking like big end. The only but I'm going to struggle to do myself, take the crank off :-(

If you have stipped it as you state so far im sure you wont have much trouble taking the crank out.

Well big end bearings gone definitely I can move the con rod about 10mm at the big end. Bugger and damn.
It looks like I need special tools for the crank. May as well take the engine out and take it somewhere to be done.

It'll be a bit easier with special tools but it's perfectly possible to remove and replace the crank with normal hand tools. I know as I don't have any 'crank' tools myself and have never had any problem. Just don't use a hammer directly on the drive side to knock the crank out if you want to use the webs again.

I'm assuming it'd be better to replace the whole crankshaft and not just the big end bearing?
