BUMP!

Has there been any progress on this in the last few years?

Yes Mike, I did one a few years back. The varitronic is wired from earth through the first 2 windings and part of the 3rd and comes out on a tapping to the yellow/white wire. It is then fed back through the remaining coils to exit on the red/white wire.
So to convert it you need to remove the glue over the connector block to expose the yellow/white wire, desolder this from the 2 wires exiting the coil. The 2 enamel coil wires need to remain soldered together, insulated and ararldited out of the way. The earth connection needs to be broken and a wire added, as normal, which will then be run back through the connector block where the old yellow/white went.

For those using the varitronic for AC only, you will get a little more power using the red/white to power everything rather than the y/w (the y/w would then need isolating).

Wow! That's great news Kev, thanks for this.
I don't suppose you have any pictures or wiring diagrams do you?

I'm afraid I haven't, I did this a few years ago and the knackered ones I stripped to see how they were wired have been thrown away.
However, the photo, on page 3, shows the 2 enamel wires going to the y/w (in the braided sheath) that need to be detached from the y/w but remain connected together.

Gotcha! Sounds pretty simple. Think I'll see if I can pick up a spare to convert ;-)
Watch this space, I'm sure I'll have some questions :D
