The ideal choice IMHO would be 18/47 on an Italian GP200 box (Same box as GP125 or LIS 125) which would be easy on the clutch and have a good spread of ratios and same overall ratios as LI 150 15/46.

You could use 19/47 on the GP box for 4.95 or even 18/46 for 5.11 if you want to be between the reccomends on here.

I use 19/46 on an italian GP box in my series 1 TS1 - it pulls fine and it doesnt matter if I'm one or two up

The same engine when it was in my series 3 in England pulled 17/46 on an Li150 box - and with the lesser weight of the series 3 it pulled that fine too!

I would only go back to standard gearing on a TS1 if I wanted to cane it around a go cart track

Use the li box though, but is it italian or spanish, the spanish li 150 has a bigger jump from 3rd to 4th so would be worse.

As I said here the other day, "a well set up ts1" will pull 4.8 easy.

Why dont you just try all the options for gearing you have and then choose the one that feels best?

Its an Italian Li 150. I might try the Li 150 in my other scoot with the Franspeed race and use the gearbox out of that (Indian Gp 200) in this new tourer....just to see what its like....All this spare time on my hands  I spend most of it in my workshop....lol....better than housework :D

bizzly wrote:Hi, I'm building a new TS1 225 engine and I'm looking at using a Li 150 gearbox, but not sure on what sprocket combination to use. I have had a look at the gearing calculator but aint got a clue on whats what and all the jargon.
I will be using a Taffspeed touring pipe and it will be used for riding 2 up occasionally. I'm about 15 stone and the other half is about 9 stone, so it will be like wanting to pull an elephant
Any help much appreciated
Bizz

ps.....if you dont think that gearbox will work, I could always use something different.
Hi Bizzly,
I ride a TS 230 with a taffy mk4 touring pipe. My dyno graph clearly shows that the pipe will brickwall at approx 7250 revs. There is hardly any rev-on at all. Peak power is approx 5250 rpm, enabling you to pull tallish gearing. I initially spoke to Ian at Taffspeed about suitable gearing. He said that providing the exhaust port hadn't been raised that his preferred choice was to aim for around 4.8. He also mentioned that there was no proven real benefit of transfer timing of over 125 degrees.
He also did say that he produced shorter header pipes for those scooterists who liked to raise the revs a little ( and therefore pull shorter gearing) thou this was moving away from what his pipe was originally intended for - a touring pipe.
He further added that other barrel mods could be done allowing even taller, 4.4 gearing to be pulled, thou he stressed that an engine was the sum of its parts and needed to be designed with an end goal in mind.

Just as an added consideration, what reedblock you thinking of using?

I was going to use a Yam reedblock with an MB manifold.

So with 5.2 you will end up with a TS that pull well but max out at 68mph. Right on!

Isn't that about the same as a stage 4 200 with a standard carb?

Exactly. I think I'd have been asking for advice from other places too.

Think you'll find it's 70.4 mph Soosh which is what I said earlier. With 4.8 it'll have a theoretical max of 76.5 (not realistically acheiveable with 22 stone and luggage) and a cruising speed of 64 mph with drops to 60 mph (at over 7000 rpm in third) every time you hit an incline or headwind. . . . . . . . 5.2 seems more relaxed to me.

Muttley if you've got a stage 2 GP200 on a std carb that'll hit 68 mph with 22 stone and luggage and cruise uphill and down all day at 60 mph easily I'd like to buy it off you. Just over 60 and cruise at 55 but slower on hills one up witrh a 15 stone rider is more like it.
