Would you not need your links to be reversed to make room for the bearing housing?

My plan is to do away with the speedo drive housing and weld a new bearing housing to the back of the carrier plate.

The carrier plate has to align the caliper to the disc once assembled, if you remove the speedo drive you still need to space it by that distance for everything to line up with the disc, so gain nothing.
